APEMO builds a house for a mother & her 2 children
Operation Lula Isandla, an initiative of the African People’s Movement led by Wrr Mzolo, Wrr Mabizela and Wrr Hadebe, has successfully built and handed over a house to Ms Phakamile Madondo and her two children residing at Moyeni (Ebhalekisi) – Ward 08 of Okhahlamba Local Municipality.
Ms Madondo was born and raised at Moyeni (Ebhalekisi) until the tragic downturn of her life when her parents passed away and was involuntarily forced by circumstances to relocate and stay with her family relatives. Over time she then returned to the land of her birth with the hope and dream to rebuild the house of her parents, nevertheless such an aspiration was short lived and curtailed by the prevalent unemployment that our society is burdened with. All she could do within her limited resources was to erect a shack as temporary shelter for herself and 2 kids albeit the social and material conditions consequently turned it into a permanent structure.
During community engagements, the Operation Lula Isandla team met with some community members who then flagged Ms Madondo’s dire situation and requested that the team goes to her to evaluate the situation and intervene. When the team got there they couldn’t hold back their tears when they interacted with Ms Madondo, “it was a heart wrenching moment”, said one of the members. It then became very clear and evident that after several times of asking for assistance, Ms Madondo was not receiving any from the ward 08 councilor, Cllr Mavundla of Inkatha Freedom Party. Therefore, instead of politicizing the situation as others often do, Operation Lula Isandla immediately started with the planning phase of the self funded housing project.
Today the 37 year-old mother is warm and safe with her 2 kids in their very own 2 room house built by the African People’s Movement. Her dignity as a young woman and resident of Ebhelekisi has been restored. Her dream realized. Her hopes that have long died resuscitated back to life because of the African People’s Movement.
